I agree, but I also think that homework is part of a larger conversation about whether the public school system is in need of radical overhaul. Compulsory education is now 100 years old and the world has completely changed in those hundred years. We no longer need to train people to be compliant factory workers who follow directions, but we still educate them that way. I’m not sure I know what the ideal public education system for the 21st century would look like, but I’m confident that it would look almost nothing like school.
