I literally did "put 4 kids in her" and we actually do have traditional gender roles. It helps that she homeschools the kids. I think one of the things that the industrial revolution/public schools did was it took industry and people out of the house.

Your husband isn't here anymore, he's at work. Your kids aren't here anymore, they're at school. And we don't need you to make clothes or grow food or anything, we'll just pay for that. So what's left for you to do? Well, if you can afford servants, then nothing. If you can't, you can just do the work that servants do. Pretty raw deal. Much easier to have traditional roles when the kids stay home too.

But yeah, inflation is pretty brutal with a six person, one income family.
