I think there's two relevant points here: one is the savings which you hit on beautifully. The other is that this is a luxurious lifestyle no matter how you look at it. I'm not aware of any housing market where $2 million is only enough to afford a dump. Plus four bedrooms for four people means you have 1-2 free bedrooms, not most people's definition of living in squalor
