I think this is a profound insight. It can be tough to pick a partner and you hear things like “opposites attract” and it’s tough to know what should be a deal breaker, but I think you’ve hit it on the head: your deepest values are the most important thing. I think a relationship can survive many differences in personality and opinion (and those differences are actually usually healthy and help both people grow), but it can’t survive when fundamental values are in conflict.
